Bowling greens are the flat lawn surfaces that are used for playing the sport bowls. This sport uses an asymmetrical bowl (or ball) where the goal is to roll it closest to a smaller white bowl. The sport is most popular in Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom, but some bowling greens exist in the United States as well.
In other parts of the world, where the sport is more popular such as Australia and Canada, bowling greens have been replaced with hundreds of synthetic greens. The United States is lagging behind on the trend, but one bowling green in California is changing that. With all of the factored costs of weed management, cutting, and watering, synthetic greens actually end up being a cheaper investment in the long run. When will other bowling greens take the cue and go green? For environmental purposes and economical reasons, synthetic greens are now the practical choice.
